PODKLIP – ELLEN KURAS – CREATING MEANING WITH THE CAMERA

ELLEN KURAS reflects on being a student and how she eventually came to realize that cinematography is symbolism… that in order to create meaning, you must unite the story through the visuals…

Having studied anthropology and semiotics at Brown University, photography at RISD and 88mm filmmaking in New York, cinematography was a finely-honed passion of Ellen Kuras. The first film she shot, the bold Samsara: Death and Rebirth in Cambodia kickstarter her success with several awards. Soon after, through a relationship with producer power house Christine Vachon, featured in Episode 4, she began shooting narrative dramas for Killer Films production company. Since then, she continued to prove herself as one of the pioneer female cinematographers in the previously male-dominated career shooting everything from high budget films like Blow* to independent movies like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind*. In 199, she was invited into the American Society of Cinematographers, the fifth woman among over 400 male members. A Gotham Award was given to her for her entire body of work in 2006, and she has served on the jury of the Sundance and Berlin International Film Festival. Today, she graciously shares her breadth of knowledge and experience, speaking across the US at film schools and various prestigious film festivals alike.
